Fresh from his debut year, the deeply dark and glitteringly glamorous Joe Sutherland returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a brand-new hour, Toxic, at Underbelly Dexter from the 1st – 27th August.
2018 has seen the world question masculinity and gendered social constructs in ways never explored before. In the wake of Harvey Weinstein, Louis CK, and Spice Girls reuniting Joe Sutherland brings an hour of biting razor-sharp social critique mixed with a healthy dose of Sutherland-truths. Toxic explores what it means to be a queer identifying man in this modern age and the confusion that past generations have created. Sutherland is a fresh slap in the face of a gendered war that is still being waged.
In 1988, a single mother gave birth to a little baby boy. Growing up in Coventry, that boy went on to question if he was a boy at all. As a child, Joe believed he would grow up to be a woman. But now he’s a grown man, and has taken the leap and moved in with a boyfriend for the first time.
Join Joe as he navigates the transitions in his life and asks the questions that ring guiltily through his head, despite living in domestic, lefty, same-sex, bliss: “which one ‘wears the pants’?”, “Are there ‘girl jobs and boy jobs’?” and “For the love of God, who is leaving bogies on the bedside table?”
Toxic asks one of the largest and most complex questions this side of the 21st century as Sutherland explores how he came to call himself a Man.
The multi-talented Joe Sutherland is not one for resting on his laurels. After being a finalist in the New Act of the Year and Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian awards and being selected for the Pleasance Comedy Reserve at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015, Joe now regularly performs at the biggest comedy clubs in the UK. He has also supported Ellie Taylor from 2016 – 2018, as well as RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Sasha Velour, Alyssa Edwards and Trixie Mattell on their their UK tours. His 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show Model/Actress garnered critical acclaim from the press.
Joe’s screen credits include a part in the LGBT historical comedy drama Pride as well as being a writer of Channel 4’s Raised By Queers.
