SNL writer and one of the USA’s fastest rising comedy stars, El Salvador born Julio Torres made his Edinburgh Festival debut last year with his show My Favourite Shapes. This year, he is bringing his strange stories and personal anecdotes to the Soho Theatre.

The show is centred around one of Julio’s biggest passions: shapes. During this unique show, Torres sits behind a table and guides us through a varied collection of trinkets. A camera angled to the table top lets the audience view a projection of Julio’s hands as he guides us through stories about his favourite shapes. The objects are as varied as plexi-glass squares, glass pyramids and a Faberge Egg who wonders if he’s too much. The show quickly became a favourite of many festival-goers and fellow comedians in Edinburgh last year and will surely prove to be a hit in London’s trendy and quirky Soho.

The objects in Julio’s collection form the inspiration for many outlandish stories – one black broach, for example, brings up an anecdote about Helena Bonham Carter! Some others are shapes that Julio merely finds intriguing – such as bizarre trinkets found in a Japanese store. Each has their own name, personality and backstory. Julio also claims to have been gifted a few porcelain animals from Tilda Swinton and these are on display too, along with notes about each one.

Along with being a staff writer for Saturday Night Live, Julio has appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and recorded his first half hour comedy special for Comedy Central last April.

The Brooklyn-based comedian moved to NYC from El Salvador to study literature at the New School. In 2013, Julio was a finalist in the NBC Stand-Up for Diversity showcase and then was named one of Comedy Central’s 2014 Comics to Watch. In 2015, Julio was honoured as one of the New Faces in the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival and was picked by Time Out as one of their rising stars. Julio has developed original content for Broadway Video’s Mas Mejor network, including his series Diego + Valentina. After writing for The Chris Gethard Show and on Billy On The Street, Julio went on to guest write for the 41st season of Saturday Night Live and is now full time staff for season 42, writing some of the strangest and most twisted sketches for the show. Julio can also be seen on Louis CK’s Horace & Pete as well as High Maintenance on HBO.
