2017 New Zealand International Comedy Festival Fred Award – Winner
Rose Matafeo is back at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with her new show Sassy Best Friend produced by Berk’s Nest and directed by Phoebe Bourke for Berk’s Nest.
If her life were a romantic comedy, Rose would still be the sassy best friend. Like every other stand-up comedian, she just wants you to love her, and she’ll do anything for it like taking you to the airport for a mad-dash for love, saying all the funniest lines and probably failing the bechdel test. In a mixture of sketch, stand up and poorly developed characters, Sassy Best Friend tells the age-old tale of a 20-something trying to find out who she is and realising that she unfortunately might be a terrible person.
In her home country of New Zealand, Rose Matafeo is known as the star of hit TV3 shows Funny Girls, Jono and Ben and 7 Days. In 2013 she was awarded the Billy T Award which recognises the brightest up and coming New Zealand comedians and has previously been won by the likes of Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Rose has performed at the New Zealand Comedy Festival where her previous show, Finally Dead, enjoyed a sold out run. She was nominated for the Barry Award for Best Newcomer at the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. She has also provided tour support for Reggie Watts and Rob Delaney in New Zealand. Rose and Sassy Best Friend has also just won the prestigious 2017 Fred Award for the best show by a New Zealand comedian at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival.
In the UK, Rose has appeared on BBC3’s Pls Like, Have I Got News For You (BBC One) and will feature in the upcoming series of BBC One’s W1A.
